The World of Design

Graphic design is the process of planning, designing and creating visual messages that convey the company’s mission, services or products to its targeted audience. Letters, images such as animation and sound effects are used to present the information on the web.

Graphic designers are responsible for the images on the site like the logo, banner, visual web tools like icons and navigation bars, foreground and/or background design of the site, and Flash animation. They also determine the size and arrangement of the visual content and effects on the page of the screen. Hence, graphic designers fashion the way the site looks and feels to enhance a user’s online experience. In addition, they deal with making business cards, brochures and advertisements for the company.

Graphic designers should be creative, observant, critical and analytical to form concepts and execute it. They should also know how to use traditional and digital image editing tools and software applications.

Art on the Web

With the advancements in technology, graphic artists are turning more and more to creating digital imagery for clients. Digital design appears more refined in detail, the colors more refreshing and bold in texture and hue, and the possibilities of creating works of art is without limit.

However, if it’s simply creating art for Art’s sake then the power to create lies solely on the artist. No other person can dictate the outcome of one’s work. In the case of web design, artists that work with websites must always keep in mind the client’s preferences and make sure the design pleases the majority of the Internet crowd.

In addition to excellent design skills, a web designer must be capable of editing web pages using CSS. Design in the Web 2.0 era is based on using CSS styles to handle hundreds of pages and the dynamism of content which changes in a rapid pace. Using CSS will shorten the time to edit the site’s appearance without affecting its functions.

Open Design, Same Quality

Proprietary software such as the Adobe Creative Suite are perfect for web designers. However, not everyone has the money to fund such a venture, especially when you need licenses for everyone in the team. As an alternative, many graphic designer and web designers have turned to using Open Source software that can deliver the same quality output as the paid ones.
