Webmaster
Web masters typically install web server and O/S, perform backups and design and build web sites. Although different kinds and sizes of organizations require other various tasks from web masters.
In small organizations and projects, web masters can become a project manager, spec writer, programmer, administrator and mediator/liaison. While large organizations employ a number of people to handle and run their web servers. In this kind of environment, a web master focuses on the web server, service and technology associated with it. Another task also includes writing programs or PERL scripts. The are times wherein the web master’s duties may overlap with others though. In a very huge corporation, a web master establishes the overall corporate web design and policies, ensures that the network infrastructure is running smoothly by checking up on the corporation that provides this service, educates authors about HTML so they can fix a problem page themselves, generates and analyzes log reports, and publishes and manages content through link checking, meta data and content migration. They are also responsible for monitoring and tuning server performance, managing user/group accounts, creating templates for authors, interacting with clients, promoting the site and supervising the design of the corporation’s web site- if it is not done by an outside firm. At division and product levels, several web masters organize and develop the web content and programming for their division or product. In addition, a web master will assist in creating the design, organization, and content for the corporation’s intranet.
On the other hand, a web master may own a small operational web site wherein he is also the developer, programmer and author of the content. On larger sites, the web master coordinates and oversees the activities of people working on the site. If the web master is hired by a larger web site, or promoted to the position, web masters engage in web design, project management, or employee supervision. Other duties may also include setting up web site navigation, determining content placement, managing content and appearance, advertising, marketing, regulating and managing user’s access of rights and reading user feedback and complaints about the site.
